Teary Eyes during Make-up? — Here is what you should do
Today’s episode talks about the fear every makeup artist and makeup lover, the fear of a teary eyes client, model or even yourself. Teary eyes during makeup can ruin a perfect work, slow you down tremendously and get on your nerves. I have seen situations where people give up on the whole makeup because they or their model kept tearing up in the process. As a face model, one of the drawn criteria's is not to have a teary eyes. But the truth is some people have really sensitive eyes and there is nothing that can be done about it and honestly it’s not a bad thing. It is your eyes simply trying to protect itself. Although there are ways to go around it as a makeup artist or during personal makeup application. Which is the exact tea I would be spilling today.
Upcoming muas probably wonder if professional muas get teary eyed clients because their pictures and videos seem flawless like nothing ever happened, while the fact is that they do, the difference is they know how to handle it which is one of the things that makes them a professional. People have different ways to handle a teary eyes depending on which is convenient for them. Interested in taking a step to become a pro? Read the instructions below.
1. ALWAYS ASK
If you are a makeup artist about to apply makeup for your client or model, you should first ask if the person has a teary eyes or not. This would avoid a lot of catastrophe and make you know your next step. But this is not the best because at times asking might not solve the problem as the person just might tell you 'NO I DONT TEAR' and end up tearing. Someone who does not tear on a regular day might tear, due to product reaction and several other reasons. You do not get angry just because you asked and the person told you No. And for personal makeup, you probably already know if you have a teary eyes and you are here to find out how to avoid it or work with it.
2. EYES WORK FIRST
Some people start with every eye application before working on the skin and vise versa depending on which is convenient and faster for them. It is advised that you know how to do both flawlessly because most people with teary eyes tear when you work around their eyes while during the skin work they do not tear. If you have a teary client/ muse or you personally have a teary eyes you should do everything eyes first. Therefore, as a makeup artist it is advised you start with everything eyes before diving into skin work just in case your client has a teary eyes.
3. GIVE TIME
Another thing that might work for teary eyes is giving the person time/ breathing space. Wait for the tears to stop flowing , try making the person forget about it, crack some jokes, make the environment warm and friendly. Do not make the person feel having a teary eyes is a crime. Even though your flawless work might have been perfectly ruined😅. It would help calm you down, and if you are calm your model would be calm and not tear as much.
4. ALWAYS HAVE A COTTON BOD IN YOUR KIT
What work does the cotton bod do? It is very useful in cases of a teary eyes, it stops the tears from flowing down to the face when placed carefully on the rear end of the eyes. The model/ you simply put your head up so the tears are re-directed to the rear end of the eyes and you place your cotton bod there to avoid it flowing to the face, after this you give your model/ yourself some time to see if more tears would flow, when sure no tears would fall out, you simply reapply and cover up. If you use wipes/ hanky in place of the cotton bod you would only make it worse, from experience.
5. USE MORE OF BEAUTY BLENDERS
When working on teary eyes using fat brushes would make the person tear. It is advisable to use beauty blenders for majority of the applications. Beauty blenders are soft and easily trusted by the eyes. Make use of your beauty blender and very tiny brushes if necessary when blending regions close to the eyes. You can use big brushes when applying products that are not close to the eyes.
6. AVOID "LOOK UP'S" AND "CLOSE YOUR EYES"
Makeup artists when applying products tend to tell their client to look up and close their eyes. but the reversed case is that some eyes are sensitive, and when the eyes are closed for too long they tend to tear, or look up for a long period of time. When you have a teary eyes client find your way around, make sure they are not looking up and closing their eyes for too long.
7. MORE BAKING POWDER
Dealing with teary eyes you need to apply more baking powder under the eyes, when the person tears all you do is dust off the excess powder which is what the tears have affected and reapply normal powder on that spot. You wait for the tears to dry before doing this or you risk ruining the whole work.
8. RE-APPLY PRODUCT ON AFFECTED AREAS
Simply wait until the tears stops and drys up, then reapply more product on affected area. This does not always come out perfect, therefore it is advisable to use the cotton bod before the tears falls out but incase you run out of cotton bod then this is your next option. It might be time exhausting and needs all the patience in the world but it works as well.
9. BE FAST
Be fast when applying makeup, some people react to siting down too long, or their faces being touched for a long time by tearing. The faster you are, the lower the probability of your model/client tearing.
10. BE PATIENT
This might sound easy but not every one can be patient. Majority of the instructions given earlier would not work if you panic and lose your patience. So in which ever method you plan to adopt always remember to be patient.
